Belmont Abbey College
Our Namesake Instution
As a small Catholic college founded on Benedictine values, Belmont Abbey College educates students to lead lives of integrity, succeed professionally, become responsible citizens, and be a blessing to themselves and others.
Virtue & Excellence
Belmont Abbey College educates students in the liberal arts and sciences so that in all things God may be glorified. The college is guided by the Catholic intellectual tradition and rooted in the Benedictine hallmarks. Both inside and outside the classroom, Belmont Abbey College provides programs that foster virtue and excellence.
Today’s campus dates back to shortly after the Civil War. Fr. O’Connell, a missionary priest, purchased land in Gaston County, NC, to establish a religious community dedicated to the education of youth. The first school on this property was chartered in 1886.
Abbot Placid Solari, O.S.B., the 8th Abbot of Belmont Abbey Monastery, is the current Chancellor of Belmont Abbey College. He has previously served as an assistant professor in the Theology Department, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and interim President. Many of our monks serve as teachers and mentors at Belmont Abbey College. Members of the college community look forward to seeing the monks on campus, to join them in prayer, and to get to know more about their lives with the Order of St. Benedictine.
