Br. James Raber professed solemn vows at our community’s Eucharistic celebration on the Feast of Saint Benedict, July 11, 2018. For Br. James, the profession of solemn vows marks the conclusion of his canonical period of formation, as he has committed himself now to seek and serve God in this community for the rest of his life. In so doing, Br. James also becomes a full chapter member of the community, sharing in the responsibility to steward our community going forward, in seeking to do God’s will.
Abbot Placid presided at the Mass at the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians, with many guests and friends from the College community and the broader Diocese of Charlotte joining us for the occasion. The celebration was a joyful one, and included a festive banquet afterwards, where guests could congratulate Br. James, while enjoying excellent food and good conversations.
Br. James is from Charleston, SC, and came to Belmont Abbey after having worked as ship’s navigator in the Merchant Marine for a number of years, visiting many parts of the world in the process. Since coming to the Abbey, he has taken classes in philosophy and psychology, worked with the Residence Life staff of the College, and served as chaplain for some of the College’s athletic teams. Going forward, Br. James will begin graduate studies in counseling at Lenoir-Rhyne University beginning this fall.
We congratulate Br. James on his solemn profession and thank him for his self-offering in service to the Lord!
